The Baluchari saree originated in Baluchar, a small village in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, India. It flourished in the 18th century under the royal patronage of Murshid Quli Khan, the Nawab of Bengal. Following a devastating flood of the Bhagirathi River, the skilled weavers later migrated to Bishnupur in the Bankura district, which remains the primary hub for producing authentic Baluchari sarees.
